Chapter Twelve

WEST OF EDGEWOOD 1830

Ezra and Colleen rode in silence, the small town of Edgewood long since faded from the horizon behind them. Time seemed to pass slower than usual while very different thoughts were running through their minds. Ezra barely noticed the surrounding scenery as they passed, or the second passenger on his horse, instead only one thought occupied his mind—What now? What was he supposed to do now that his only lead died before he gave him any real information about the man he was searching for?

Though it was not the first time the trail went cold on him, he never had to deal with the law chasing him or an extra unexpected companion. Now he had no idea where to go next and more complications than he knew what to do with.

No, that wasn’t fair—Colleen was not a complication. Truthfully, she was the only reason he was still alive at that moment, and he knew he would never be able to repay her for everything she did for him.

He only met the woman a few days before and yet she risked her life, continued to do so, in fact, to save him from certain death. And why? Because he saved her from the men who were beating her? Because he did not turn her away when he realized that there was more to her than meets the eye? Sure, that might have been enough of a reason to keep quiet about his spying on Dowes, but to break the law for him? To risk her own neck to save his from the hangman’s noose?

How horrid her life before now must have been for her to go that far for him, to give up her entire life, no matter how low it might have been, for a man she only knew for a few days. Granted, they developed a connection over the last few days, coming to each other’s rescue as they did, but was it enough to behave as she had? And, if it was, what must that have said about her life before she met him. If the little kindness he showed her had been enough for her to react as she had, did that not mean that she saw little of it before?

What about her parents? Obviously, they were not still around, considering how she ended up, but surely they must have shown her love and kindness when she was a child, mustn’t they? Like his, did hers die when she was still young? Was she on her own since then? Ezra knew his own history was horrible, bringing him to where he was in his life, how much worse must hers have been to bring her to where she was?

While Ezra tried to figure out what he would do next and how to explain the strange woman behind him, Colleen had a very different train of thought. She did not wonder where they would go from there or even what she would do once they split ways.
